For the first time, DALE and ECKENODE explores the pioneer roots of two Pennsylvania families from Spinnerstown, a community of German and Swiss Mennonites from the 1730’s. While most of their ancestors were farmers, a few were among the earliest pioneers of North America, the first to travel back and forth from the Atlantic to the Mississippi, from Montreal to Atlanta, accompanied by Shawnee wives. Martin Chartier guided LaSalle and Joliet, while Meaurroway Straight Tail Oppessa led the Shawnee on a long roundabout route from Ohio to Pennsylvania to escape smallpox and Iroquois. The Shawnee originated in the Po Valley of Italy, brought over to the Ohio Valley by Carthaginian ships in 400 BC to escape an invasion of Gauls. To my untrained eye, they look like residents of Munich, with round heads, blonde or brown hair and blue or brown eyes. They preserve a written history, and were the first tribe in the US to actively marry Europeans. An ancestor of the Dales, owners of Spinnerstown Tavern, owned the Blue Anchor Tavern on Dock Street in Philadelphia, established long before William Penn arrived, to service Dutch and Swedish fur traders and English ship captains on the Delaware. Other ancestors were either first or among the first to colonize Quebec, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
